HCAC talked about the state and economic development of Hispanic in construction

at the Governor's Advisory Council on Hispanic/Latino Affairs

Raleigh, NC. On Thursday, March 14, 2019 the Governor’s Advisory Council on Hispanic/Latino Affairs hosted its quarterly meeting in Raleigh, NC. Lissette Velez, Executive Director for the Hispanic Contractors Association of the Carolinas, HCAC, presented information about the impact of the Hispanic/Latino community on the region’s economic development, and also about educational opportunities in the construction industry. Other participants included the Latino Community Credit Union, the Latin American Chamber of Commerce of Charlotte, the NC Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and Prospera.

The HCAC presentation was called “Developing, Mentoring and Assisting Hispanic Construction Entrepreneurs” and featured the following statistics: in 2016, construction businesses made up 9.8% of all North Carolina firms.  According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, NC had 225,800 construction jobs in January 2019. Between 2007 and 2019, the HCAC provided training to nearly 1,000 contractors in construction and business management and over 3,100 workers in safety hazards and awareness. In addition, the HCAC assisted over 128 companies to achieve certification as a minority, among others.

Members of the State Cabinet were part of this important reunion as well as the strongest Hispanic broadcasting network, Univision. HCAC was proud to participate. “As the representative of the Hispanic contractors of the Carolinas, it is an honor to be part of this important initiative from the Governor’s office.  We feel included and involved in the economic matters of the region”, said Lissette Velez, Executive Director of HCAC.

“We are pleased to have a partner like HCAC presenting their perspective about the construction industry and more specifically about Hispanic contractors. They represent a very valuable part of the state’s population and we want to be of service for them”, commented Matty Lazo-Chadderton, Deputy Director of Outreach, Office of Public Engagement, Office of Governor Roy Cooper.
