The HCAC Conference was a venue for impacting economic announcements from the NC Governor and the day when the Hispanic contractors gained their very own recognition day in the City of Durham.

Durham, North Carolina. The Hispanic Contractors Association of the Carolinas’ Construction Conference gathered together the NC Governor Pat McCrory and the Durham Mayor Pro Tempore Cora Cole-McFadden along with the most recognized general contractors of the Country and small to medium sized Hispanic-owned construction businesses.

At his presentation at the conference, Mr. McCrory announced that the state has a budget of ninety million dollars dedicated to renovations and maintenance, which minority contractors and subcontractors can certainly benefit from. The City of Durham proclaimed June 3rd of 2014 as the “Hispanic Contractors Day”, Mayor Pro Tempore Cora Cole-McFadden presented this proclamation and recognized that the construction industry continues to make a positive impact on the local community though economic development, creation of jobs and it’s network of professional leaders.

“We are very thankful to the City of Durham for this special recognition, June 3rd will be remembered as the day when Hispanic contractors were recognized for their accomplishments in the industry and the valuable economic contribution they bring to the triangle area" said Renee Jones, President of the Board of HCAC.”

Throughout the day, attendees also heard from a panel of General Contractors who shared the common mistakes made by subcontractors that negatively impact hiring decisions. Panelists included LeChase Construction Services, Skanska USA, Rodgers Builders Inc, Balfour Beatty and Messer Construction and most certainly contributed to the advancement of the small businesses present in the audience.

The program included a panel focused on Supplier Diversity Programs. Panelists from Novant Health, Wells Fargo, Food Lion and CVS corporations shared their experiences about partnering with Hispanic contractors and how they can benefit from these partnerships.

As the program continued, the Brilliance Awards Luncheon took place. The following HCAC members were awarded: Marand Builders, Inc in the category of General Contractor; United Welding & Iron Work, LLC in the category of Trade Contractor; Pro Green Construction Corp. in the category of Remodeler; Tax and Business Resources in the category of Associate Member, Wells Fargo & Company in the category of Partner and the President’s Awards, recognizing the outstanding service to HCAC went to Millie Aguilar with Red Rooster Contractors, LLC and Doménico Santilli with Montes Electric, Inc. The President’s Award in recognition to the outstanding service to the Hispanic community as a whole was for Alvaro Gurdián with La Noticia, the Spanish-Language Newspaper.

Julian Arcila, HCAC Executive Director said that “HCAC members and specially Hispanic contractors inspire us every day, and it is this strength the reason that encourages the HCAC Board of Directors and staff to advocate for their economic advancement. We feel very honored to have had the Governor at our annual conference and to know that our state also appreciates our member’s contributions”.
