McColl Center for Visual Art is a nationally acclaimed contemporary art center dedicated to connecting art and artists with the community. Located in a historic, neo-Gothic church in Uptown Charlotte, the Center houses nine artist studios and over 5,000 square feet of gallery space with rotating exhibitions. The Center welcomes and invites the community to view the exhibitions, meet resident artists in their studios, and expand their understanding of contemporary art.

During a visit to McColl Center for Visual Art, the public is invited to browse the first floor exhibition and meet resident artists on the second and third floors of the Center. The gallery currently features the Squared exhibition and the work of Injoo Whang and Caitlin Masley. In addition to the exhibition, visitors of all ages and skill levels will be invited to participate in hands-on gallery activity and installation in collaboration the exhibition. McColl Center for Visual Art is open to the public from 2 to 7 PM on Thursdays and Fridays, from 11 AM to 6 PM on Saturdays, or by appointment. Admission and parking are free. Free tours are available each Saturday at 11:30 AM. A public gallery reception will be held on Friday, July 27, 2012 from 6 to 9 PM to mark the close of the Squared exhibition.

The Artist-in-Residence Program at McColl Center for Visual Art provides contemporary regional, national, and international artists with a place for artists to work, conduct research, and the opportunity to introduce their work to the public through exhibitions, open studios, and community outreach. Our open-door policy provides gallery visitors with access to the artists and their work when they see an open door. Visit the Center’s website for information on our next Open Studio Saturday, which is when all of the current resident artists’ studios stay open to the public.

Additional programs at the Center include:

  • The 2012 Summer Arts Institute which features week-long classes in visual arts for rising 1st-8th grade students. June 11 - August 3, 2012. All classes are lead by professional artists and run from 9 AM to Noon, 1 PM to 4 PM or 9 AM to 3 PM.
  • The Contemporaries of McColl Center for Visual Art are an eclectic group of artists and art appreciators of all levels of skill and knowledge. The Contemporaries meet about once per month at galleries, artist’s studios, and the homes of private collectors for programs aimed to provide opportunities for dialogue between and among the participants and the presenter.
  • The Innovation Institute at McColl Center for Visual Art helps executives unleash their creative abilities and encourage that of those within their organizations. Institute participants work with professional artists and expert facilitators to explore topics such as “Unlocking the Creative Voice,” “Pushing the Edge” and “The Value of Failure.”  Presentations, along with hands-on group and individual exercises, give participants insights into the artistic creative process and how that process can be applied to business.
