Next week is Latino Enrollment Week across the U.S. and you may see increased information or communication regarding health insurance. Affordable, quality health care options are now available through the federal and state Marketplaces!  Across the United States, 3.3 million people have utilized these options by signing up for qualified health plans.  We want to ensure that the security and peace of mind that comes with health insurance is available to ALL eligible Americans, especially members of the Latino community.  And for many, quality health insurance coverage is more affordable than they might think. Nearly 8 in 10 uninsured Latinos (across the US) may qualify for lower costs on monthly premiums through the Marketplace or Medicaid, the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP).

As our community partner and an organization dedicated to serving the Latino community, we want to provide you this information so you can help us get the word out—to let Latinos know that quality, affordable coverage is available through the Health Insurance Marketplace, and to make sure they understand their options.  The following information will be helpful for you to share:

  • Latinos can apply online at HealthCare.gov, and if they prefer to do it in Spanish, at CuidadoDeSalud.gov.They can apply via a paper application—in both English and Spanish.  Get help over the phone by calling the 24/7 customer service center (1-800-318-2596, TTY 1-855-889-4325) with translation services available, or in their local community by visiting https://localhelp.healthcare.gov/
  • If people have questions or want more information about coverage, both HealthCare.gov and CuidadoDeSalud.gov offer great information —from what a deductible is to important information for mixed status families.
  • CuidadoDeSalud.gov, like HealthCare.gov, also now supports a more robust window shopping experience. Consumers can see detailed information about each Marketplace health insurance plan offered in their area before they apply.  They can compare plans, covered benefits, physician and hospital networks, and plan prices based on household information they supply, all without a login or application.  Consumers will still need to complete the application to find out how they can get lower costs.
  • When enrolling, the following information is needed:

    1. Social Security Numbers (or document numbers for legal immigrants)
    2. Employer and income information for every member of your household who needs coverage (for example, from pay stubs or W-2 forms—Wage and Tax Statements)
    3. Policy numbers for any current health insurance plans covering members of your household
  • Enrollment is open until March 31.
